The U.S. Department of Agriculture released a re-evaluation of the Thrifty Food Plan, which is used to calculate Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits based on changes to nutritional guidance, food prices and what Americans eat.

With these updates, Florida is expected to see an increase of over $1 Billion in total SNAP benefits in 2022.

Nationally, the average SNAP benefit will increase by $36.24 per person, per month.

Increased benefits will begin on October 1, 2021.

This is the first reevaluation USDA reevaluated the Thrifty Food Plan since 2006, to reflect updated data on food prices, food composition, and consumption patterns and includes the first update of the purchasing power portion of the formula since 1975.

The Thrifty Food Plan, 2021 is the first in a series of planned regular updates. As stipulated by the 2018 Farm Bill, USDA must reevaluate the Thrifty Food Plan every 5 years. Throughout the 5-year cycle to reevaluate the Thrifty Food Plan, the cost is adjusted each month to reflect inflation using the Consumer Price Index.
