The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the inequalities immigrant and families of color face when striving to prosper and give their children the best chance at success.
These inequalities do not only occur in times of pandemic. They have been present for years and harsh, anti-immigrant policies cause a multi-generational harm to children.
The issues this coalition focuses on are what we consider to be the keys to success for the children of immigrant families– these are the children this coalition seeks to protect.
Health – We will know that we have achieved health equity when race can no longer be used to predict health, well-being, and longevity.
Immigration – Anti-immigrant policies lead to increased family hunger, unhealthy children, and a generalized anxiety in immigrant families. This can lead to a toxic stress that creates its own health care crisis.
Education – The children of immigrant families face a different set of challenges when seeking opportunities through education. From testing in native languages, bridging the digital divide, and parents finding resources in their language, the needs of the children of immigrant families must be taken into consideration.
Financial and Economic Stability – If we are to have an equal economic recovery in Florida and the United States, everyone in the country, regardless of legal status needs to be included in relief packages.
A two-generational (2-Gen) approach provides multi-generational support for families. By developing more effective policies for families with young children in poverty and aligning targeted social services that support child development with workforce development services help increase a family’s economic self-sufficiency.
